Know How Your Security System Works

Equally important to having a reliable alarm system in place is understanding how it works. From turning it on to navigating and setting it up to suit your needs, it is important to know how your security system functions.

Basic home security often comprise of the following:

  • Control Panel

  • Sensors and Contacts

  • Alarm

SENSORS:

  • Door and window contacts: These door and window contacts are switches that detect door movement. These switches are mounted to doors and windows and is held close by a magnet. The switch opens when the door or window moves away from the magnet. These should be installed on the main exterior doors, as well as windows.

  • Motion sensors: Designed to detect a person moving in a room, these motion sensors come in two types - infrared motion sensors which sense heat and microwave motion sensors which sense movement.

  • Glass-break sensors: These sensors are attuned to the sound of breaking glass that indicates forced entry. Once the sensor detects the sound pattern akin to that of shattering glass, it sends a signal to the alarm system.

CONTROL PANEL: The control panel often comes with keypads that allow you to activate or deactivate your system. These control panels also have options for a duress code - an added security that alerts local police r other authorities that you are being forced to disarm your security system. The control panel is often placed near the door for ease and convenience.

ALARM SYSTEM: Can either be hardwired or wireless, these alarm systems provide warning at the earliest possible moment and while these do not prevent a break-in, alarm systems often act as deterrents to would-be intruders.

When purchasing security systems for your home or business, it is best to know as much as you can about it. Knowledge is power!
